Before entering physical form, we made certain decisions about the circumstances into which we would be born, and the basic lessons and opportunities we wished to experience in the coming lifetime. We chose the time of our first breath based on those decisions -- the moment at which the planetary arrangement would energetically reflect our intentions.
An astrology chart is simply a drawing of the heavens at the time of that first breath. In Western astrology, we use a circle or "wheel" for the basic format. Within that circle are placed symbols that represent the planets, with each one shown at its exact position in the sky by sign, degree and minute.
The mathematical calculations required for drawing a chart were once done by hand -- but today computers are usually used, both to save time and to ensure accuracy. Once a chart is mapped, an astrologer uses both knowledge and intuition to interpret the patterns that are shown.
